Another spot brought to mind by photos from the Class of 1958 web site was Johnny's Sandwich Shop. A very popular place, it was located south of Main on 13th Street, between the Episcopal church and (what was then) the Lexington Public Library.

It wasn't a very large place, but lots of people came and enjoyed the food. The date of this photo is uncertain. Perhaps it was in the 1940s, possibly even a little earlier. Notice the brick cobblestone street! Ah, the roar your tires made when you drove over those streets!

This is a later photo -- notice the Coca-cola sign now decorating the roof, and the electrified neon sign in front. Johnny's Sandwich Shop closed and was demolished in the late 1950's, when the Episcopal church built its parish hall.

This photo shows the location of the Sandwich Shop beautifully, and also a couple of the beautiful girls of the Class of 1958! Diane (Gibson) Conger and Kay Howard were "snapped" by Mary Kay (Wilcoxon) Gooseman one day, probably in 1954. And the gentleman walking away? That's Jess Lankford, the beloved Building Superintendant of LHS!

And dig those snazzy cars with the outside sunshades!
