The Turrets and Towers of Lexington

When you think of turrets and towers perhaps you think of castles in Spain or The Lord of the Rings. Small midwestern towns usually have dull skylines. But Lexington, always different, has a few exotic elements!

This fine home, at the corner of 20th and South Streets, is currently being refurbished.

Surprising many long-time residents of Lexington, it was recently demonstrated that the finial at the top of this tower is actually the "knob" at the end of a flag pole. In the lowered position, the flag and flagpole are completely within the tower room. When raised from within, the flag rises above the roof about 8 or 10 feet. There a cap toward the bottom of the flagpole that closes the hole in the roof from the inside when the flagpole is extended.

Sporting both a turret and a tower at the corner of 16th and South Streets, this elegant Queen Ann style home was the Walker Funeral Home at one time. It is now the Victorianne Bed & Breakfast.

This charmer has but one little turret. Formerly the Stier residence, it is at 14th and Franklin.

Parsonage porch

The Parsonage Bed & Breakfast, at Amelia and South Streets, has a sort of faux tower on its porch!

Hidden turret

Sometimes, as in this house only a few doors east of The Parsonage on South Street, you have to look carefully to find the tower!

And sometimes, there's a certain mystery about things in Lexington...!
