TLC logo Central Strikes Back!

Back in May of this year, we showed you some shots of the kids from Arnold who made up part of the LHS class of '56. It has been suggested by some of our readers that these pages show a bias in favor of Arnold School. Nothing could be farther from the truth! It's just that Central School produced so few literate alumni...

Anyway, Barbara Tabb '55 Jarman has forwarded some photos of Central School pupils who made up part of the LHS class of '55. We'll quote Barbara:

And, not to be outdone by you former denizens of Arnold School, I am sending along a picture of the second grade at Central, 1944.  It has more of the students who went on to attend L.H.S. than did the first grade picture, and I'll send others later if anyone wants to see them.  The list of names disappeared years ago, but I've listed what I could remember many years later. I am missing any group picture from Miss Rush's 6th grade class, so if anyone has one, please ask them to share it.  Or, I guess I've already done it here, haven't I?  I'm not even sure if one was taken.

I will list below the names I remembered, and anyone who wants to 'guess' who they are can just delay looking at it and take a gander at the picture now.

To the best of my recollection, they are:

1st row: teacher, Mrs. Conger, Donna Gay Evans, Eugene Short, Bobby Scheiber, Bobby Welsh, Vieva Jarmon, Mamie Cramer, Catherine Abbott, Donna Gay Rockhold.

2nd row: Carol Wilkey, Billie Carter, Barbara Tabb, Imogene Short, Elmer Fairchild, Richard Oles, John Koch, Donald Payne.

3rd row: Tommy Martin, Gordon Wright, (?), Billy Joe Dearing, Gail (?), Roberta Thomas, Edna Williams, (Shirley?), Jewell Forsha.

4th row: Frank Neece, Melvin Scheiber, Joe Parks, Donn Drumm, Bobby Barr, Betty Jo Meade, Beverly Bates, Joyce Shaw.

This is the group picture of Mrs. Marie Gruber's 5th grade class at Central School, 1947.  Students are (and, I'll use full names as called on the roll):

1st row: Donna Gay Evans, Richard Oles, Barbara Tabb, Mildred Chason, Jewell Forsha, Vieva Jarmon, Catherine Abbott, Larry Dreyer, Donna Gay Rockhold, Mrs. Gruber

2nd row: Tommy Martin, Billy Ellis, Kenneth Kendall, Eugene Short, Gordon Wright, Melvin Scheiber, (?), Eddie McKean

3rd row: Joe Parks, Billy Garner, Donn Drumm, Letha Shaw, Imogene Short, Norma Jean Henderson, Mary Ethel Carter, Fern Wilmot

4th row: Joyce Shaw, Gene Buchanan,  Henry (?), Shirley Nadine Griffith, Delores Willard, Barbara Walton, Floyd Huffman, Bobby Barr, Gloria Winningham

Thank you, Barbara! And we should also note that Mrs. Gruber was well known to the students of Arnold School. She came to Arnold, a couple of times a week in the afternoons, to teach that all-time favorite instrument, the Tonette. Does everyone remember the tonette and the lovely music it produced when played by grade school students? Mrs. Gruber has to have been one of the bravest and hardiest of teachers!
